Fun for Football Fans

NFL teams and their cities were the topic of last week’s contest (September 10-14, 2007).  Contestants were given a map of the USA with all the NFL cities marked.  They had to identify the hometown of any five teams.  Correctly labled maps were entered in a drawing for a poster of an NFL player.  The winners are third grader Gabby B., fouth grader Jordan W., and fifth grader Chloe W.  Congratulations, fans!

Contest Results!

The results of the library’s first estimation contest of the year are in!  Students were asked to estimate the number of school supply items in the jar.  No one guessed the exact amount, but fifth grader Blake D. was very close!  He estimated 134 items and the acutal count was 136 items.  Blake wins the contents:  markers, crayons, erasers, post-it notes, paper clips, etc.  Congratulations, Blake!

Online Library Contest #1: “Good Reads” Mystery

Welcome to our first online contest of the year!  Your first task is to figure out the title of the book described below.  The book is one of this year’s nominees for the Maine Student Book Award.  All the information you need to help solve this book mystery can be found at the “Maine Student Book Award Nominees” link under the heading “Good Reads” at the right side of the page.  Once you have solved the mystery, click on the blue word “Comment” under this post and send me your answer.  The first person to correctly identify the title of the mystery book will be the winner of the contest.  The winner’ name will announced on September 24, 2007.

Clues:  This nonfiction book only has 48 pages, but it is packed with many interesting historical and scientific facts.  Albert, the author, was frightened by his subject when he was just a boy.  He took his father’s advice, however, and learned about his subject so he wouldn’t be afraid.  This fascinating book has a Lexile measure of 960.
