Fun with monster stories

November 1st, 2009

Two funny monster stories were featured in this week’s storytime for kindergartners and Mrs. McCall’s class.  The first bookGo Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberley was Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberly and the second was There Was an Old Monster(a variation on the folk song “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly”) by Rebecca and Adrian Emberley.   After the stories, the children used their leaf puppets to put on puppet shows.  They knelt behind the puppet theater in small groups as they acted out the familiar rhyme “Five Little Leaves.”  The children were thrilled with their performances!

Fire safety storytimes

October 12th, 2009

Since the week of October 5th was National Fire Prevention Week, fire safety was the theme of library visits that week.  The kindergartners and the students from Mrs. McCall’s class listened to a silly rhyme about a false alarm in the picture book “Fire! Fire! said Mrs. McGuire” and an information book about fire trucks.  They had fun with acting out the rhyme “Fire Brave Firefighters” and making firefighter finger puppets.

The first graders reviewed fire safety through the comical picture book Stop, Drop, and Roll by Margery Cuyler.  The children had the option of participating in the fire safety contest after checking out news books.

The Secret Birthday MessageStorytime for Mrs. McCall’s students featured Eric Carle’s book The Secret Birthday Message.  After hearing the story of a boy who had went on a shape hunt to find his birthday present, the children went on a shape hunt of their own.  Nine shapes were displayed in the library.  The students were told what shape to find first.  That shape gave a clue to the next shape and so on.  The treasure at the end of the hunt was a box of special animal bookmarks and some stickers.

COLOR FARM by Lois EhlertThe theme of a recent storytime for Mrs. McCall’s students was shapes.  The children practiced identifying the shapes used to make farm animals in the book Color Farm  by Lois Ehlert.  The story was followed by a game of Shape Memory.  Then the students glued shapes to blank Bingo boards.  They will use the game boards to review shapes next time they visit the library.
