At the end of every school year, the students are challenged to return all their borrowed library books. When everyone in a class meets that challenge, the class is featured on the Library Wall of Fame. So far, five classes are proudly listed on the Wall of Fame. They are Mrs. McCall’s class, Mrs. Cote’s first graders, Mrs. Carlisle’s kindergartners, Mrs. Sturtevant’s second graders, and Mrs. Meehan’s fifth graders. Which class will be next?
Animals, animals, animals
Mrs. McCall’s class continues to learn about animal life cycles. During their library time, the students learned about an insect, a bird, and a mammal by listening to Wasps by Martha E.H. Rustad, Ducklings by Colleen Sexton, and Fawns by Anne Wendorff. Afterwards, the children participated in a fun activity. They hunted for 18 animals around the library and then sorted them into animal groups (insects, birds, mammals). Once they finished sorting, they earned the key to a locked treasure box and each student got to pick a treasure!
Summer reading ahead!
We know the end of the school year is in sight when our favorite children’s librarian from Springvale Public Library (SPL) visits our school! Mrs. Sheila Dube spent Thursday with us, telling us about the summer reading program at Springvale Public Library. This year’s theme is “Reading Olympics.” Students can sign up for the reading fun the day school gets out (June 13th). For more information, visit SPL in person or check out their website. Thanks for your visit, Miss Sheila!
Cycle of life
Mrs. McCall’s students continue to learn about life cycles. They started with plants and are now moving on to animals. During their weekly library time, the children explored the life cycle of four different animals through simple informational texts: The Life Cycle of a Dog, The Life Cycle of a Grasshopper, The Life Cycle of a Salmon, and The Life Cycle of a Turtle. All four are by Lisa Trumbauer.
e-i-e-i-o
McCall’s class is learning about farms. During their visit, we read I Went Walking by Sue Williams and The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle. Then we did a rhyming activity using animal names and used the poems about farm animals in On the Farm by David Elliott as riddles to solve.
