Kindergartners to Take Home Library Books

During their weekly visits in September, the kindergartners have been learning about appropriate library behavior and book care.  In preparation for taking their library books home for first time, the children have discussed the need for a safe place to keep their library book when they are not reading it.  The location should be a spot (such as on a dresser or a shelf) where the book will stay dry and away from younger brothers and/or sisters and pets.  If the library book is kept in the same spot every week, it will be easy to find and return on library day.  The children will be given a plastic pouch to keep their library book in as it travels to and from school.  Parents are asked to help their children be responsible library users by helping to take care of the borrowed books and to return them the following week.

The children in Mrs. Dupere, Mrs. Carlisle, Mrs. Morrison, and Miss Brown’s rooms have library on Tuesday so they take their first library books home on October 2, 2007.  The children in Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Sylvestre, and Mrs. Dillane’s rooms have library on Friday.  Since October 5th is a Teacher Workshop Day, the children in those rooms take their first library books home on October 12, 2007.

 Happy Reading!

Our contest for the week of September 24, 2007, featured a quiz with pictures of five big machines used in construction.  Participants were asked to match the name of each machine to its picture.  Many students correctly identified the bulldozer, excavator, cement mixer, dump truck, and roller.  Their papers were entered in a drawing.  There was one winner from each participating grade:  Abby W. (first grade), Cassidy V. (second grade), Brandon M. (third grade), Michaella W. (fourth grade), Colby C. (fifth grade), and Alex G. September Estimation Contest #2

Our third contest of the month was another estimation contest.  This time a jar was filled with pony beads.  Many people participated, but no one estimated the exact amount.  There were 1,378 beads and the closest estimate was 1,205.  The lucky guess was made by fourth grader Makayla G.  She wins the whole jar of beads!  Congratulations, Makayla!

Where do dreams come from?

In Gossamer, author Lois Lowry weaves a wonderful story about small creatures called dream givers.  They come when we are sleeping and create special dreams for us each night.  You will have to read this book to learn how they do it!
