Star Wars contest

In preparation for Star Wars Day on May 4th, this week’s competition asked participants to label eight famous characters from the Star Wars movies.  Character names were provided at the bottom of the page to assist with spelling.  Every paper with the characters correctly identified was entered in a drawing for a Darth Vader notebook.  The winning Star Wars fan is third grader Gwen.  Congratulations, Gwen!  “May the Fourth” be with you!

Pull tabs

File_000 (20)How many aluminum pull tabs fit in a large plastic container?  Lots!  This week’s library competition was an estimation contest.  The container held 7,526 tabs!  The closest estimate was 7,693 and it was made by fourth grader Carter  What good estimating!  

The library continues to collect pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.  Donations are welcome!

Another geo quiz

File_000 (16)Did you know Oceania is one of the seven continents?  Oceania is the tropical region of the Pacific Ocean that is made up of Australia, New Zealand, and numerous other islands.  This week’s competition was a geography quiz about Oceania.  Students were asked to label the countries of Australia and New Zealand and the Pacific Ocean on a map of Oceania.  A selection of five possible answers was provided for participants to choose from and an atlas was available for reference. Correctly labeled maps were entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal. The winning geographers are second grader Marissa, third grader Colby, and fifth grader Avery.

April Fool’s Day fun

File_001 (4)What month has 28 days?  All of them!

In recognition of April Fool’s Day, this week’s competition involved riddles. Participants were asked to match answers to five riddles.  Every paper with the correct pairings was entered in a drawing for one of three fish bowls with two glass fish each.  (Could this be the perfect pet? You never have to feed them and they never die!)  The lucky winners are first grader Derek, first grader Regan, and third grader Ava.  Congratulations, fish owners!

Jelly bean jumble

jellybeansLast week’s competition was an estimation contest.  A jar was filled with 164 jelly beans and students were asked to guess the number.  No one estimated the exact amount, but second grader Brody was the closest with his estimate of 172 jelly beans.
