Breakout!

File_000 (26)Several more classes had the opportunity to experience a “Breakout” this week.  Mrs. Abell and Mrs. Bemis’ first graders pretended to be trapped in the library by “The Swamp,” the mean substitute teacher from Miss Nelson is Missing! by MissNelsonMissing1Harry Allard and James Marshall.  They had to solve three problems to breakout.  Besides creative problem-solving and working together, the students used their knowledge of nouns to unlock the locks and get the bookmarks hidden in the box.

Mrs. Sturtevant’s second graders participated in the Life Cycles Breakout.  Although they ran out of time before solving all three problems that locked the box, they did apply their knowledge of life cycles to open two of the locks.

big6_homepage_logoMrs. Gallagher and Mrs. LaPointe’s fourth graders participated in the Big6 Breakout which served as a review of research skills taught this year.  They had to select best sources for specific information questions, use QR codes to identify books to find and use the index to locate information within them, find the most current book of specific topics, and use sources to locate specific information.  When Mrs. Gallagher’s class did the Breakout, they were close to solving all the problems but ran out of time.  Mrs. LaPointe joined her students in solving the six problems so they managed to open the locked box with minutes to spare!

Hooray for responsible library users!

pink posterMiss Davis’ Pink Room friends recently filled their fourth library book return chart.  The chart holds 100 stickers and each one represents a returned library book.

Mrs. Taylor’s first graders completed another poster puzzle this week.  Each of the 120 pieces of the poster puzzle was earned by File_000 (28)returning a library book.

Both classes received small surprises for their effort to be responsible library users.  Keep up the good work, students!

Noticing nouns

MissNelsonMissing1File_000 (26)Mrs. Taylor’s first graders also participated in a Breakout game last week.  The scenario for their session was that the mean substitute teacher, Miss Viola Swamp (from the picture book Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard and James Marshall), was holding them captive.  To breakout, they had to unlock three locks: a padlock, a word lock, and a number lock.  The students had to identify the nouns printed on signs (and ignore the verbs), count and order colored plastic cups, and scour the room for pictures of Viola Swamp to find the key.  Luckily, the students completed the tasks in the nick of time!

The buzz about bees

CARPENTER_BEE_2Mrs. Abell and Mrs. Bemis’ first graders learned about a third type of bee this week:  the carpenter bee.  This type of bee does not live in groups and it makes its nest in wood.  Like bumblebees and honeybees, only the female bees have stingers.  Carpenter bees are gentle and, like all bees, help with pollination.

What’s the buzz?

life cycle of the honeybeeMrs. Bemis and Mrs. Abell’s first graders continued their research on bees this week.  First we reviewed the questions they had listed about bees and what they learned about bumblebees last week.  Next we read to the information book The Life Cycle of PebbleGo-logothe Honeybee by Paula Z. Hogan.  Then we visited the PebbleGo Animal database to read more about honeybees.  The entry included a brief video showing activity in a hive, and a sound clip of buzzing bees.  We ended the lesson by recording information we learned about honeybees that answer our questions.
