Learning in the Library

Another excellent Edublogs.org blog

Big news!

I love books bagsThe kindergartners started taking home their library books on Tuesday!  Each student was given a special bag to protect the library book as it travels to and from school.  A label on the bag reminds families which day of the week is library day.  Another label reminds them to save the bag and to use it all year.  Students must return their books that day in order to get a different book.  Families, please remind your favorite kindergartner to pack his/her library book on (or before) library day!

Seasonal storytime

Scarecrow's HatThis week’s storytime had a scarecrow theme.  The lesson began with the story rhyme “Five Little Scarecrows.”  It was followed by the picture book The Scarecrow’s Hat by Ken Brown.  In the story, chicken wants Scarecrow’s straw hat.  In order to get it, she arranges a series of trades with various animals.  After hearing the story, the children listed all of the characters.  Next they matched the items available for swapping with the characters who owned them.  Then the children swapped the items so that chicken could have Scarecrow’s hat for a nest.

Responsibility recognized

red room chartWe want all CJL students to become good readers and responsible library users.  To encourage kindergartners to return their library books on time, the children earn a sticker to put on their class chart every time they return a book.  The chart is full when the students have earned 100 stickers. At that point, the children earns a small prize and start filling a new chart.  Last week the Red and Orange Rooms filled their first book return chart!  The kindergartners in Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Sylvestre’s room earned orange spider rings.

posterThe first graders participate in a similar program.  Instead of stickers, however, they earn a piece of a puzzle.  A large poster is cut into 100 pieces.  Each piece is numbered.  The children draw a puzzle piece from a bag and glue it in the space on a piece of poster board with the same number.  When the poster puzzle is complete, the class earns a small prize.  Mrs. Bemis and Mrs. Gillis’ first graders completed their first puzzle posters this week!  Every student in the two classes received a small holiday trinket.

Congratulations, kindergartners and first graders! Keep up the good work.

Going nuts in the library!

acornsThis week’s contest was an estimation contest.  A large jar was filled with 234 acorns and students were asked to guess the amount.  No one guessed the exact amount, but fifth grader Sophie was the closest with her estimate of 246 acorns.
