Learning in the Library

Another excellent Edublogs.org blog

“Run, run, as fast as you can…”

A gingerbread  man theme continues in Mrs. McCall’s classroom and in the library.  Last week  the children listened to Eric Kimmel’s version of The Gingerbread Man.  It was presented in an ebook format on a large screen.  After the story, the children used their gingerbread man stick puppets to act out the rhyme “Five Little Ginger Cookies.”

More pigs

Last week Mrs. Margoles’s class listened to one more version of The Three Little Pigs folktale.  It was The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz.  In this retelling, the pigs study martial arts.  The third pig’s skills scare off the wolf off and the three pigs open up a dojo!  After the story, the students paired off to play their “Three Little Pigs” games.

“I have a little dreidel…”

Last week’s contest was a dreidel graphing activity in recognition of Hanukkah.  Students spun one of the tops ten times and recorded in tallies which Hebrew letter faced up each time the dreidel stopped spinning.  Graphs with exactly ten tally marks were entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal.  The lucky winner is sixth grader Megan.

On display

Mrs. David’s fifth graders have been studying about land forms in science.  They made three-dimensional models of volcanoes, glaciers, and rivers at home.  After sharing their projects in class, the students have placed the models in the library for everyone to enjoy.

December word scramble

Last week’s library competition was a word scramble.  Students had to unscramble six words related to the month of December.  Picture clues accompanied the list and books about the three holidays were on display nearby to help with spelling.  Everyone who correctly spelled Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, winter, snow, and candles was entered in a drawing for a “Kinz Klip” (a small stuffed animal with a plastic clip attached).  There is one winner from each grade.  They are second grader James, third grader Abbygale, fourth grader Olivia, fifth grader Kristina, and sixth grader Seth.  Congratulations, winners!
