Big6 Breakout!

File_000 (26)Mrs. Bradbury’s fifth graders and Mrs. Brown’s sixth graders participated in their first Breakout last week.  Both groups were given 45 minutes to solve six multi-step information problems that reviewed the Big6 skills they developed over the school year.  The fifth graders worked together to solve the problems and unlock the box in record time!  They still had 13 minutes 35 seconds left on the clock when they opened the box!  The sixth graders came mighty close to matching that time.  They had 13 minutes and three seconds left on the clock by the time they got all the locks off and the box open.  Phew!  Great work, students!

Delightful dinos!

IguanodonDiplodocusMrs. Dillane and Mrs. Carlisle’s kindergartners visited the library on Tuesday for a second lesson about dinosaurs.  We started with a pair of informational texts by Janet Riehecky: Iguanodon and Diplodocus.  Both were plant-eaters, but Iguanodon walked on two feet while Diplodocus walked on all four.  These books were followed by the funny picture book Edwina: the Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct by Mo Willems.  Afterwards, the children made dinosaurs out of pre-cut shapes.  I showed them how they could use the same pieces to make Iguanodon or Diplodocus. File_000 (30) If they Edwinahad time, the children drew backgrounds and glued their dinosaurs on them.

What goes together?

Mickey and Minnie balloonsBacon and eggs, salt and pepper, Mickey and Minnie…lots of things go together!  This week’s contest, the last one of the school year, asked students to match pair of book characters such as Henry and Mudge, Ivy and Bean, and Calvin and Hobbes.  Students who matched the six pairs correctly were entered in a drawing for a children’s book.  The three winners are first grader Sonny, third grader Vinny, and fifth grader Rosa.  Congratulations, winners!

File_000 (26)Ms. Oakes’ fifth graders experienced their first Breakout this week. There was lots of searching for clues and answers and some great teamwork. They managed to solve the six information problems to open six locks with just a couple of minutes to spare!
