A good day for walking
This week’s kindergarten storytime featured two books about taking a walk. The first book, I Was Walking Down the Road by Sarah E. Barchas, is a simple story of girl who collects animals to be her pets. The children noticed the pairs of rhyming words on each page and participated in the reciting the refrain. The second book, How Do You Wokka-Wokka?
by Elizabeth Bluemle, is very different. It features an urban setting and a multi-ethnic cast. The book is filled with movement, rhythm, and rhyme as it describes how individual children move. After reading that book, everyone took a “wokka-wokka” around the library, moving in all sorts of different ways!
Every week has seven days…
The theme of kindergarten storytime was once again the days of the week. The children sang a song about the days of the week before hearing Mrs. Honey’s Hat by Pam Adams. In the story, Mrs. Honey wears a fabulous hat covered with feathers, flowers, cherries, lace, ribbon, and a shell. Every day, an animal removes an item from the hat and replaces it with something else. By the end of the week, Mrs. Honey’s hat is quite a sight to see! The children helped to retell the story using a straw hat and Velcro pieces representing all the traded items. Then they decorated newspaper hats with cut-outs of the original items on Mrs. Honey’s hat.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday…
Kindergarten storytime focused on the days of the week. Students listened to the book Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward and sang the song “Every Week.” In addition, they played a circle game in which the days of the week were recited as a bean bag was passed around. Each time they named Saturday, the person with the bean bag sat down. The game continued until all but one student was left standing.
More kudos
This week more classes earned awards for returning their library books on time. In kindergarten, the Blue, Brown, and Purple Rooms filled with their chart with 100 stickers and earned a surprise. Mrs. Sturtevant’s second graders received the Golden Shelf Elf Award and a small prize for filling their book return chart. Keep up the good work, students!
Grade 2, Grade K | Comment (0)Fun with monster stories
Two funny monster stories were featured in this week’s storytime for kindergartners and Mrs. McCall’s class. The first book
was Go Away, Big Green Monster! by Ed Emberly and the second was There Was an Old Monster(a variation on the folk song “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly”) by Rebecca and Adrian Emberley. After the stories, the children used their leaf puppets to put on puppet shows. They knelt behind the puppet theater in small groups as they acted out the familiar rhyme “Five Little Leaves.” The children were thrilled with their performances!
