Which state is which?
Last week’s contest was a geography quiz. Contestants had to label Maine, Florida, Idaho, and Hawaii on a blank map of the United States. There were many correctly labeled maps, but only one winner, fifth grader Eva.

This week’s competition was an estimation contest. Students guessed the number of pumpkin seeds in a large jar. A small jar holding 100 seeds was provided as a clue. There were a total of 915 pumpkin seeds in the jar. Fifth grader Derek won the contest with his estimate of 927 seeds. Congratulations, Derek!

CJL’s annual Math Night was held Thursday, October 22nd. The library’s contribution to the event was an estimation station. We provided a jar of objects for each grade level, but students could submit an estimate for any or every jar. Here is a list of the counts and the winners:
- Kindergartner Makayla’s estimate was closest to the 16 fake teeth.
- First grader Sophie made the nearest estimate to the 66 rods.
- Second graders Oriah and Xavier tied with the closest estimate for jar of 110 pattern blocks.
- Third grader Samantha’s estimate was closest to the 136 rocks.
- Fourth grader Aaron’s estimate for the jar of 157 dinosaurs was the closest.
- Fifth grader Jacklyn made an guess might close to the 255 cubes.
- Fifth grader Alex made the closest estimate for the sixth grade jar of 348 rubber bands.
The winners received math-related books as prizes. Congratulations, winners!

The week of October 5th was National Fire Prevention Week so our contest was a fire safety quiz. Students had to complete these four fire safety rules.
- If your clothes catch on fire, you should stop, drop, and (roll).
- Crawl under (smoke).
- Check a door before opening it. Feel it with the back of your (hand).
- Don’t play with (matches).
Quizzes with the correct answers were entered in a drawing for Smokey the Bear items. The winners are Jameson (grade 1), Alan (grade 2), Jordan (grade 3), Grace (grade 4), Cassie (grade 5), and Samantha (grade 6). Congratulations, winners!

The contest for the week of September 28th featured analogies. Students had to complete four analogies with an oppositional relationship. Every contest paper with the correct answers was entered in a drawing. There was one winner from each grade. The winners are Morgan (grade 2), Jennifer (grade 3), Abbi (grade 4), Anna (grade 5), and Christian (grade 6). Each winner selected a package of markers or crayons for his/her prize.
