Last contest

RMH pull tabThis week’s competition was the last one for the school year.  It was another pull tab estimation contest.  There were 5,942 tabs in a jug.  Sixth grader Catlyn made the closest estimate (5,609 tabs).  That’s quite close!RMH logo

As always, the pull tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.  Please continue to save tabs for the library this summer.  We appreciate your help!

Summer Reading Program

On Thursday, Mrs. Sheila Dube, the children’s librarian at Springvale Public Library (SPL), visited our library.  She met with each class to tell the children about the photo (1)SPL’s summer reading program.  The theme of this summer’s program is “Fizz, Boom, Read!” so Mrs. Dube came dressed as Miss Frizzle, the teacher from Magic School Bus series. Each student received a bookmark highlighting this summer’s events. For more information about SPL’s exciting summer reading program, visit their website or call 324-4624.  Be sure to include reading in your summer plans!

Big6 news

big6_homepage_logoThree more classes participated in the evaluation of the Big6-by-the-Month program initiated across the district in elementary schools this year.  Miss Perrin’s third graders, Mrs. Paradis’ fourth graders, and Mrs. Brown’s sixth graders all took the online TRAILS assessment on research skills.  The performance data, reported by grade level, will help us identify strengths and areas to focus on next year.

Delightful dinosaurs

Pigeon needs a bathDue to the Memorial Day holiday, only three kindergarten classes had a library lesson this week.  The children in the Purple, Green, and Pink Rooms listened to two books by author/illustrator Mo Willems:  The Pigeon Needs a Bath and Edwina: The Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Edwinawas Extinct.  In keeping with the dinosaur theme, the kindergartners also acted out the chant “Dinosaur Dance” and recited “Five Little Dinosaurs Jumping on the Bed,” (a variation of “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed”).
