Estimation contest

This week’s challenge was an estimation contest.  A large jug was filled with 8,215 aluminum pull tabs.  No one guessed the exact amount, but third grader Gavin’s estimate of 8,041 was the closest. Great job estimating, Gavin!RMH pull tab

We thank the many students and teachers who collected the pull tabs for us.  The tabs will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Portland.  We also thank our fourth grade volunteers for counting the tabs.  Since they counted them in groups of 100, they never knew to the total amount.RMH logo

Big6 in January

EDM reference book

big6_homepage_logoThe Big6 is a six-step model for solving information problems or making decisions using information.  This week classes finished Stage 3 (Location and Access) of the Big6.  Miss Perrin’s third graders practiced using the index in their Social Studies textbook.  Miss Mallon’s second graders practiced using the index in their Math Reference Book and then worked independently with the index in an informational text about insects. Miss Spinney’s sixth graders practiced locating specific books in the nonfiction section of the library and answering a question with the help of the book’s index.

Next week is the beginning of a new month and the next stage of the Big6!

Chickadee-dee-dee news

Princess and Packet of frozen peasStarting on Tuesday, the kindergarten classes were introduced to the fairy tale The Princess and the Pea through a retelling with simple props.  The tale served as a foundation for this week’s Chickadee Award nominee, Thephoto (5)Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas by Tony Wilson.  After hearing the fractured fairy tale in which the future princess is tested with a sleeping bag, a camping mat, and a bag of frozen peas, the children made paper sleeping bags and stick puppets of a princess or a prince.  They had the option of giving their puppets yarn hair, paper crowns, and clothes cut out of paper scraps.  Everyone had fun creating their puppets and the results were wonderful!photo (4)

Randy Riley’s Really Big Hit by Maine author/illustrator Chris Van Dusen was the picture book the first and second graders and Mrs. Margoles’ class heard. The story is about a clever boy who builds a mammoth robot to bat a fireball away from his town. After the story, the first graders made their own robots out of squares of colored paper.  They had fun describing their robot’s abilities as they created them.photo (7)photo (6)Randy Riley

Book returning praised

yellowpinkMrs. Dillane’s Yellow Room friends and Miss Davis’ Pink Room friends filled their second book return charts this week!  A chart holds 100 stickers.  Students earn one sticker each time they return a book.  It takes the whole class working together to fill the chart.  The children received foam snowflake stickers in celebration of their accomplishment.  Keep up the good work, kindergartners!

SCRABBLE, anyone?

scrabbleThis week’s contest was a name game.  Students were asked to write the letters of their first name in boxes.  Under each box, they were to write the value of that letter according to its value in the game of SCRABBLE.  Then they had to add up the value of all the letters and record the total.  The point value of the names varied from 4 points (for Rosa and Lane) to 24 (for Zachary). The most common point value is 8 points.  The total point value did not matter, however.  Any name with the correct letter values and total was entered in a drawing for a 3-D puzzle of the EiffelTower.  The lucky winner is third grader Brady!
