Caldecott finale

Extra YarnLast week the kindergartners completed their unit on the Caldecott Medal.  The 2013 Caldecott Honor Books and the Caldecott Medal winner were introduced to the children.  They listened to the Caldecott Honor book Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen before hearing the Caldecott Medal winner This is Not My Hat  by Jon Klassen.  After the stories, the children re-created the large fish from This is Not My Hat.  We discussed how placing the black pupil in different places on the white eyeball changes the fish’s expression.  We also talked about this is not my hatways of creating a hat for the fish out of paper scraps. The kindergartners enjoyed making an expressive eye and a fun hat for their fish.

Trees and wreaths

photo (8)This week’s competition was an estimation contest.  A jar was filled with 262 green plastic trees and wreaths of different sizes.  No guessed the exact amount, but second grader Mathew was the closest with his estimate of 265 trees and wreaths.  Congratulations, Mat!

Good library habit rewarded

photo (7)Mrs. Smith’s Red Room and Mrs. Sylvestre’s Orange Room friends filled their second book return chart this week!  Each sticker on the chart of 100 represents a returned library book.  The children received mini animal-shaped notepads as a reward for their good habit of returning library books.  Congratulations, friends!  Keep up the good work!

Reindeer fun

who will drive my sleigh tonightMrs. McCall’s class had some reindeer fun during their library visit this week.  First they participated in a story rhyme “Call Rudolph.”  Next they listened to the story Who Will Guide My Sleigh Tonight? by Jerry Pallotta.  Then they watched live reindeer via a web cam!  And, finally, they played letter Bingo and received stickers as prizes.  Of course, they checked out new library books, too!

More Big6 lessons

big6_homepage_logoThis week seven classes visited the library for a Big6 lesson.  Mrs. Abell, Miss Mallon, Mrs. Sturtevant, and Miss Perrin’s students all explored Stage 2 of the Big6, Information Seeking Strategies, with the topic of pandas.  The first graders sorted information and story books before learning about pandas through an informational text and PebbleGo’s Animal database.  Miss Mallon and Mrs. Sturtevant’s second graders learned about pandas through the Heinemann First Encyclopedia.  Miss Perrin’s third graders learned how to use Destiny Quest, the library’s online catalog, to find information books about pandas.  Mrs. Gallagher’s fourth graders learned about the resources available in the library about Maine and what the online encyclopedia, Britannica School Edition, has about our state. Mrs. David’s fifth graders used Destiny Quest’s Web Path Express tool to search for informational websites about hominids, a topic they will be learning about in the new year.  Miss Spinney’s sixth graders also used Web Path Express, but they explored websites with information about the human digestive system.
