Hats off to Mrs. Honey!

mrs honeys hatThis library visit marked the end of our “days of the week” unit.  The grand finale was the picture book Mrs. Honey’s Hat by Pam Adams.  In this story, Mrs. Honey wears a fancy had decorated with flowers, cherries, feathers, lace, a ribbon, and a shell.  Over the course of a week, many changes are made to the hat.  For example, Mrs. Honey’s grandson pulled the feathers off the hat and accidently left his bubble gum behind.  After hearing the story, the children participated in a retelling activity.  Volunteers used props to act out the changes made to the hat.  Then others helped to return the hat to its original state.  After selecting new books to take home, the children made their own versions of Mrs. Honey’s hat.  They glue paper flowers, cherries, lace, and shells to a newspaper hat that had ribbon attached.  The finishing touch was a real feather!  The children were delighted with their creations.  Many thanks to volunteer Roger Gagne for making the newspaper hats and to volunteer Jean Whitaker for preparing the pieces and supervising the activity.

Bear-y good books

Three bearsMrs. Margoles’ class enjoyed a “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” storytime this week.  First they listened to a Paul Galdone’s version of a familiar folktale, The Three Bears.  Then they heard a very different story featuring Beware of the Bearsthe same characters.  In the book Beware of the Bears! by Alan MacDonald, the three bears follow Goldilocks and enter a house after her.  They make a mess in the kitchen, living room, and bedroom, just as Goldilocks had done in their house. ( You’ll have to read this book to hear the surprise ending!)  The students requested that a third version be read so they also listened to Jan Brett’s version, 3 BearsGoldilocks and the Three Bears.

Learning about informational text

So you want to be an inventorMrs. Gallagher’s class has started a unit on informational text.  To get the students excited about nonfiction, she asked Mrs. Miliano to booktalk a few books when the class visited the library.  On Tuesday, the students were presented with “commercials” about seven different informational books.  The response was Actual-Size-9780618375943tremendous!  The students started fighting over who got which book!  Mrs. Gallagher solved the problem by checking out all the books for everyone to share back in the classroom.
