Ghostly fun

ghosts in the houseStorytime for some of the kindergartners (Tuesday and Wednesday classes) and Mrs. McCall’s class featured friendly ghosts.  First the children listened to the ghost story, Ghosts in the House! by Kazuno Kohara.  In this picture book, a young witch captures the ghosts in a haunted house and uses them as curtains, tablecloths, and blankets.  Next the children went on a “ghost hunt.”   They used their hands to pretend to walk through a forest (crunch, crunch, crunch), step through a bog (squish, squish, squish), cross over a bridge (creak, creak, creak), and tiptoe into a haunted house. There they were frightened by a ghost and hurriedly retraced their steps through the haunted house, over the bridge, through the bog and the forest, and back home.  Phew!  The last activity was a different ghost hunt.  Each child looked for a paper ghost in a book.  The ghosts had letters on them and the children put the letters in alphabetical order.

Kudos to kindergartners!

purple chartMrs. Taylor’s Purple Room friends filled their first book return charts this week!  Each of the 100 stickers on the chart represents a returned library book.  As a reward for their efforts to be responsible library users, the children received purple spider rings.  Keep up the good work, kindergartners!

Geo quiz

photoThis week’s contest was a geography quiz.  Students were asked to identify three countries marked on a map of North America.  Atlases were available for reference.  Every map with the countries of Canada, Mexico, and Cuba correctly identified were entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal.  The lucky young geographer is third grader Ceili.

Fun with Bill Martin, Jr.

Barn DanceMrs. Margoles’ class participated in another author study during their Friday visit.  This time they discussed the books by Bill Martin, Jr.  The children are familiar with Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and its companions (Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?; Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You See?; and Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You Hear?) as well as Martin’s alphabet book Chicka Chicka Boom Ghost-Eye TreeBoom.  This week, the students listened to two other books by Bill Martin, Jr.:  Barn Dance! and The Ghost-Eye Tree.  Like all of the author’s books, these two demonstrate Bill Martin’s love of rhyme, rhythm, and repetition.

Going batty

Bat Loves the NightMrs. McCall’s class is learning about bats this week.  During their library visit, the children listened to Bat Loves the Night  by Nicola Davies.  Much accurate information about bats is included in the PebbleGo-logostory.  Afterwards, the children visited PebbleGo’s Animals database to learn more about bats.  They even got to hear the sounds bats make and to view a short video of some fruit bats eating.
