Construction zone

Big WheelsLast week’s contest was about construction vehicles.  Students were asked to match pictures of five different big machines with their names.  Every paper with the bulldozer, excavator, cement mixer, dump truck, and roller correctly matched was entered in a drawing for the book Rough ‘n’ Tough Big Wheels by Beck Ward.  The lucky construction foreman is third grader Mathew.

One hoppin’ storytime

The kindergartners have started a new library unit about frogs.  This week they listened to the informational book Tadpole Diary Tadpole Diaryby David Drew.  Next they learned the song “Five Little Speckled Frogs.”  Then Mrs. Miliano, with the help of a frog puppet, told the story “The Wide-Mouthed Frog.”  (Did you know that the wide-mouth frog lives in Number One Pond right here in Sanford?)  After that tall tale, the children started making frog puppets of their own.  They will finish the puppets during their next library visit.

Public librarian visits

Mrs. Sheila Dube, the children’s librarian from the Springvale Public Library (SPL), was our guest on Thursday.  She met with each Great Fuzz Frenzyclass to tell the students about the summer reading program at SPL.  The program begins June 24th and runs for 8 weeks.  This summer’s theme is “Dig into Reading.”  During her visit, Miss Sheila entertained the younger children with a reading of The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens and the older children with a mad-lib story.  Thanks for visiting us, Miss Sheila!

Animal life cycles

fish-is-fishMcCall’s class learned about animal life cycles this week.  During the group’s library visit, the children listened to Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni, a story about the friendship between a fish and a tadpole as the baby frog passes through the stages of its life cycle.  This fictional picture book was followed by an informational book about the life cycle of a frog, Tadpole Diary by David Drew.
