Geo quiz

This week’s library contest was a geography quiz.  Students were asked to label China, India, and Russia on a map of Asia.  Atlases were available for reference.  Every correctly labeled map was entered in a drawing for a special pencil.  There is one winning geographer from each grade level:   Alec from second grade, Libby from third grade, Stephanie from fourth grade, Darren from fifth grade, and Joseph from sixth grade.  Congratulations, winners!

Earth Day recognized

Monday, April 22nd, was Earth Day.  To commemorate this annual environmental event, kindergarten storytime focused on our planet.  First the children listened to the brief informational book In My World by Heather Adamson.  The book introduces the globe and a map as representations of our planet and compares them to a photograph of Earth taken from space.  The children examined a real globe and the world map rug in the story area as we read the book. They also looked at other examples of world maps in an atlas. Next the children experienced Earthdance by Joanne Ryder.  This book asks the listeners on to imagine being the Earth, rotating slowing in space.  After the story, the children acted out parts of the book, turning slowly, facing the sun during the day and turning away from the sun at night.  Then the children gathered around a pretend birthday cake and sang “Happy Birthday” to the Earth.  The lesson ended with the first step of a multi-week project.  This week the children colored small maps of the earth and attached them to cardboard bodies (made from recycled file folders).  These creations are the beginning of a new race of environmental superheroes called “Earthpeople.”  Stay tuned to see how they evolve into fully decked out superheroes next week!

Delightful diagrams

The first graders learned more about informational text features this week.  With the nonfiction book The Life Cycle of a Butterfly by Lisa Trumbauer, the children learned that diagrams are pictures with labels that convey information.  The flow diagram in the book shows the life cycle of a butterfly (egg –> caterpillar –> chrysalis –> butterfly).  In addition to the pictures and labels, the diagram has arrows to show the sequence in which the stages take place.  The students created flow diagrams, too.  First they wrote the labels and drew the arrows.  Then they added different shaped pasta to represent the four stages in the butterfly’s life cycle.

Down on the farm with Mrs. McCall

Mrs. McCall’s students are learning about farm animals in class so their library storytime also had a farm theme.  First the children sang a song about farm animals to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus.”.  Then they listened to the picture book Duck on a Bike by David Shannon.  In this funny story, all the farm animals try riding bikes!  A second story, Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell, followed.  In this farm story, the farmer is lazy and makes Duck do all the work.  In the end, the animals chase the farmer away and run the farm themselves!

Addition to library honor roll

Miss Smith’s Brown Room friends filled their third book return chart this week!  Each of the 100 stickers on the chart represents a returned library book.  The children each received a stick of sidewalk chalk for being such responsible library users.
