Learning in the Library

Another excellent Edublogs.org blog

Cat week

Last week during their library visit, the kindergartners learned a new song entitled “Days of the Week.” Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward, the story about a week in the life of a mischievous cat named Cookie, came next.  It was followed by a second cat story, Drat That Fat Cat by Pat Thomson. In this story, a hungry cat eats everything it meets! The children seemed to enjoy the antics of both cats.

Welcome back!

Now that testing if over and the library is back on its regular schedule, Mrs. Margoles’ class was able to visit the library again.  The children enjoyed a storytime and follow-up activity.  Their stories were Ghosts in the House by Kazuno Kohara and The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. After the stories, the children played “Roll and Color.”  The students rolled a die to determine which part of a scarecrow to color. They rolled and colored until their scarecrows were complete.

Making words contests

Last week’s contest challenged everyone to make five words using the letters in the word pumpkinsI, up, punk, and skin are just a few examples of the many words students listed.  Every paper with five or more words was entered in a drawing for a real pumpkin.  The lucky winner is second grader Siarah.

More scarecrow fun

Last week Mrs. McCall’s students enjoyed the book Clifford’s Halloween by Norman Bridwell and the cumulative tale of The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams.  After the stories, the children played a game in which they rolled a die to accumulate the pieces of the scarecrow.  Once they had a hat, a pumpkin head, a shirt, a pair of pants, two gloves, and two shoes, the children glued their scarecrows together.
