Chickadee Award Program ends

Last week the kindergartners and first and second graders all listened to our last Chickadee Award nominee, Clever Jack Takes the Cake by Candice Fleming.  It is the humorous tale of a poor boy who bakes a cake for the Princess’ tenth birthday and tries to get it to the castle in one piece.  After the story, the kindergartners and first graders sequenced pictures depicting the story’s events.  Then they used the pictures to retell the story.  Mrs. Miliano disassembled Jack’s cake (an inedible version) as they retold each event.  Finally, the children donned their party hats (made the previous lesson) and used the re-assembled cake to sing “Happy Birthday” to everybody!

Sharks!

When Mrs. McCall’s class visited the library last week, they had fun learning about sharks.  The lesson began with a reading of the picture book The Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark by Ken Geist. (It is a twist on the traditional folktale The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf.)  Next the students visited the PebbleGo animal database to learn about great white sharks.  Then the children made shark hand puppets to take home. Watch out for those teeth!

Geo quiz

Last week’s contest was a geography quiz.  Students were asked to identify the capital of five different states in our country.  Every paper with Augusta, Maine; Salt Lake City, Utah; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Nashville, Tennessee; and Bismark, North Dakota circled was entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal.  The lucky winner is second grader Kamber.

Chickadee Award Program

Last week the kindergartners and the first and second graders all enjoyed the picture book Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana Khan.  It is a great story about sibling rivalry.  Rubina, a young Pakistani immigrant, is invited to a birthday party and must take her younger sister Sana if she wants to go.  Pesky Sana spoils Rubina’s fun at the party and, afterwards, eats both big red lollipops that she and Rubina are given as party favors.  The worst part is Rubina does not get invited to other parties.  When Sana finally gets a birthday invitation of her own, the youngest sister wants to go, too.   Now Sana knows firsthand what Rubina felt!

After the story, the kindergartners and first graders used Dot Paint to decorate party hats.  The children will be able to take home their cone-shaped hats this week when the Chickadee Award Program comes to an end.
