Chickadee news

This week we repeated three Chickadee Award nominees, but they were shared with different classes this time.  The kindergartners listened to Calvin Can’t Fly: The Story of a Bookworm Birdie by Jennifer Berne.  They created black starlings after the story.  The first graders enjoyed A Pig Parade is a Terrible Idea by Michael Ian Black and created pink paper pigs to parade around the library.  The second graders finally got to hear The Interrupting Chicken by David Stein.

Rhyming fun

When Mrs. McCall’s class visited the library last week, they explored rhyming with a Valentine’s Day theme.  The lesson started with the children listening to the story Rhyme Time Valentine by Nancy Poydar.  It is the story of Ruby, a little girl who loves to rhyme.  She creates rhyming valentines for her family and friends.  After the story, the children matched rhyming words pictured on valentines. Like the story character Ruby, the children found rhyming fun.

Alligator research

Mrs. Minchin’s class visited the library for more practice locating information in nonfiction text.  This time their topic was alligators.  First, they children visited the PebbleGo database to learn about alligators.  They listened to the informational text being read aloud and to the sound alligators make.  They also watched a brief video about the fearsome reptile and viewed a map showing where it lives.  Next the children turned to the Heinemann First Encyclopedia.  The children read the article which includes fact boxes, a diagram with labels, and a picture with a caption.  Then the children worked together to complete a graphic organizer.  They recorded the alligator’s ecosystem, food, enemies, and means of protection in the appropriate sections and added two interesting facts about the creature.  The children are using the graphic organizer to help them write informational pieces back in the classroom.

Two classes make library honor roll

Two first grade classes deserve recognition for their positive library behavior.  Mrs. Bemis and Miss Brown’s  first graders each finished their second poster puzzles last week.  A poster is cut into 100 pieces and the children earn one piece of the puzzle each time they return a library book.  When a poster puzzle is completed, the children receive a small prize.  Keep up the good work, first graders!

Dental health month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month.  In recognition, our most recent competition featured a dental health message.  Students were asked to spell five words using only the letters in the sentence, “Brush your teeth!”  Anyone who did so was entered in a drawing for a tooth pillow.  There is one winner from each grade.  They are first grader Savannah, second grader Hunter, third grader Madeline, fourth grader Erin, fifth grader Shayna, and sixth grader Manda.  Congratulations, winners!  Show us your smile!
