Learning in the Library

Another excellent Edublogs.org blog

Recognition earned

Mrs. Smith’s Red Room and Mrs. Sylvestre’s Orange Room Friends visit the library together each week.  They are the first kindergarten group to fill a second book return chart with 100 stickers.  The children selected foam stickers as a reward for the group’s accomplishment.  Miss Brown’s first graders completed their first poster puzzle last week.  They earned each piece of the 100-piece puzzle by returning a library book.  Each first grader received a pencil for his/her contribution to the class’ achievement.  Congratulations, Red and Orange Room Friends! Congratulations, first graders!  Keep up the good work.

Cal-Cal-Caldecott…

“…Medal on a book, means it’s won the picture prize so take another look!”

During their weekly visit last week, the kindergartners reviewed the name and significance of the Caldecott Medal.  They learned the “Caldecott Song” before exploring two nonfiction Caldecott Honor Books:  First the Egg by Laura Vaccaro Seeger and What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? By Steve Jenkins and Robin Page.  The location of the library’s nonfiction section was introduced and the students were taught how to use a shelf marker when browsing informational texts.  After the lesson, the students completed their personal Caldecott Medals (illustrated the previous week) and proudly left the library wearing them!

Geo quiz

Last week’s library contest was a geography quiz.  Students were asked to label three countries on a map of North America.  Every paper with the countries Canada, Mexico, and Guatemala correctly labeled was entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal.  The lucky winner is sixth grader Aaron.
