Learning in the Library

Another excellent Edublogs.org blog

The library loves ABC order!

This week’s library contest was an alphabetical order activity.  Students were given a list of six fall words and asked to put the words in alphabetical order.  All correct papers were entered in a drawing.   Three winners were selected:  second grader Anthony, fourth grader Kameron, and fifth grader Victoria.  Congratulations, winners!

Open House book raffle

one book raffle prize

Every year the library has a free book raffle during the school’s Open House.  Each student who visits the library gets four chances to win a book.  He/she deposits the tickets in containers next to the desired books.  After Open House ends, one lucky ticket is drawn from each container.  This year 20 books were given away.  The winners are kindergartner Nathan; first graders Alex, Jack, and Lauren; second graders Emma, Kaiyla, Libby, and Sadie; third graders Jayci, Juliana, Korey, and Sophie; fourth graders Desirae and Madison; fifth graders Alyssa, Bridget, Dan, Deidre; and sixth graders Grace and Justine.  Congratulations to all!

Library contests

The library has sponsored three weekly competitions so far this month.  The first was an estimation contest.  A jar was filled with 247 marker caps and fifth grader Emma L.’s estimate was right on the button!  She won a package of markers.  The second competition recognized Constitution Day (September 17th).  Students were asked to spell five words with the letters C-O-N-S-T-I-T-U-T-I-O-N  D-A-Y.  Every paper with five correctly spelled words was entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal.  Second grader Grace was the lucky winner.  The third competition was another estimation contest.  This time students guessed the number of pencils in a large container.  There were 223 pencils and fifth grader Emma O.’s estimate was only one away!  She won a coloring kit.

Orientation (K & 1)

The month of September is dedicated to orientation sessions with each class.  The purpose of the sessions varies by grade level.  A brief overview of the sessions for each grade level follows in separate posts.

For kindergartners, the newest members of our school, the lessons introduce the children to the library and the library staff, book care, and the responsibilities that come with being a library user.  Two ways to read a book (read the pictures and read the words) is modeled and students are reminded to read the pictures before checking out a book.  The kindergartners are currently keeping their library books in the classroom each week, but they will begin taking them home in October

First graders review library procedures (how to find a book and check it out), library etiquette (quiet voice, walking feet, and hands to self), and book care through two great picture books:  IQ Visits the Library  by Mary Ann Fraser and The Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen.  After reading The Library Lion, the first graders make their own library lions to take home.

Orientation: Grade 2

Second graders review library procedures, etiquette, and book care through the picture book The Shelf Elf  by Jackie Mims Hopkins.  They also review the differences between stories (fiction) and informational texts (nonfiction) with a paring of books about chameleons:  The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle and Chameleons by Lyn Sirota.  The children discuss how the library uses alphabetical order to organize the picture books.  The books are in ABC order by the first letter of the authors’ last names.  Each storybook has a yellow letter sticker on the front cover of the book that matches the first letter of the author’s last name and the letter sticker on the shelf. To practice using alphabetical order, the students go on a book hunt. They are each given a different card displaying the cover of a book and the author’s name.  The students have to find their specific books.  During a second session, the students go on another book hunt, but this time they search for specific books in the early readers section.
