Jelly bean estimation contest

The library competition for the week of April 11th was an estimation contest.  The jar held 263 jelly beans.  Miss Lachance, the computer/technology teacher, made the closest guess.  Her estimate was only one away!  Sixth grader Abby’s estimate of 260 was the next closest estimate.  The two winners shared the jelly beans.

Egg-citing storytime

Hurry HurryLast week’s kindergarten storytime was eggs-tra special.  It began with the story Hurry! Hurry!  by Eve Bunting.  Next the children viewed a video about a chick hatching from a Reading Rainbow episode.  The story The Egg Book  by Jack Kent followed.  Then, using a special see-through poster of eggs, the children discussed various animals that lay eggs (birds, fish, dinosaurs and other egg bookreptiles, amphibians, and insects).  The lesson ended with the children decorating a paper egg and drawing an animal on the other side.  When you hold the egg side up to the light, you can see through the egg to the animal on the other side!

Informational text: Labels

ChipmunksThe first graders continue their unit on informational text.  Last week they focused on labels, word(s) that identify part of a diagram or photo.  The children read the informational text Chipmunks  by Patricia Whitehouse.  The book features labels on a photo of a chipmunk and a cross-section of its burrow.  Afterwards, the children labeled their own photos of a chipmunk.

What hatches from an egg?

Once again, storytime for Mrs. McCall’s class featured an egg theme.  This time the students sang “Five Little Ducks” after Ducklings2hearing the informational text Ducklings  by Colleen Sexton.  Next the informational text Out of an Egg was read.  This book discusses many different animals that hatch from eggs.  As an extension of the book, the children solved egg riddles.  Plastic eggs, each containing a miniature plastic animal, were presented with clues about the animals. After the children made their guesses, the eggs were opened to reveal the hidden animals.  Storytime ended with a plastic egg hunt in the library.

Wow! Sanford!

Wow CityLast week’s storytime for the Brown, Green, Pink, and Yellow Room students was about places.  They listened to the picture book Wow! City!  by Robert Neubecker. The story is about a little girl who visits New York City for the first time.  Her reaction to everything is a delighted “Wow!”  The story was followed by a slide show entitled “Wow! Sanford!”  The slides feature places and events in Sanford such as Gowen’s Park, the fire stations, the Sanford-Springvale Historical Museum, and a parade.  The caption below each image is “Wow!”  The children were delighted to recognize so many places and things in Sanford.  The storytime also included a concept lesson about the relationship among house, town, state, country, and planet.  Mrs. Miliano used nesting boxes to illustrate the relative size of each in relation to the others.
