Geo quiz

Our most recent library contest was a geography quiz.  Students were asked to label three countries on a map of Africa.  Atlases were available for reference.  Every paper with Egypt, Madagascar, and South Africa correctly labeled was entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal (lion or mandrill).  The geo quiz winner is second grader Sophia.

Fabulous fables

Tortoise & hareMrs. Brown’s fifth graders are learning about fables.  They visited the library on Tuesday for a presentation on this form of traditional literature.  Several fables were shared to illustrate the typical fable’s characteristics: brief story, few characters, simple setting, lesson about human behavior, and a moral stated at the end.  Samples from three major sources of fables [Aesop (Greece), the Panchatantra (India), and LaFontaine (France)] were shared.

Chickadee Award Project update

Hurry UpLast week’s featured Chickadee Award nominee was Hurry Up and Slow Down by Layn Marlow.  In this tale, two friends, Tortoise and Hare, spend the day together.  Because Tortoise is so slow-moving, Hare is always telling him to hurry up.  When it is time for bed, however, Hare wants Tortoise to slow down and re-read their favorite picture book slowly.  After the story, the kindergarten and first grade classes went on a book hunt in the library.  They were given clues to the hiding places of seven pictures from the story.  After collecting all the pictures, the children sequenced them in story order.

Hurry Up and Slow Down was paired with the famous fable, “The Tortoise and the Hare.”  This story was presented in video format.

Mrs. McCall’s students listened to Hurry Up and Slow Down and viewed “The Tortoise and the Hare” video.

Testing the IceIn addition to the book above, Miss Mallon’s second graders explored Testing the Ice by Sharon Robinson.  This story is an anecdote about the author’s father, Jackie Robinson, the first African American Major League Baseball player.

Besides Hurry Up and Slow Down, Mrs. Sturtevant’s second graders listened to Tsunami!  They also used the imaginary flower gardens they had painted to make Japanese paper lanterns.

Kudos

Mrs. Dillane’s Yellow Room friends filled their third book return chart last week!  Each of the 100 stickers on the chart represents a returned library book.  As a reward for their accomplishment, the children received pencils and glittery stickers for the 100th Day of School.  Keep up the good work, Yellow Room friends!

The students in Mrs. David’s fifth grade have been studying changes in the earth’s surface.  For a culminating activity, the students made models of volcanoes, rivers, and glaciers.  Some of the model are now on display in the library.
