Connecting with Willard students

On Friday, Mrs. Paradis and her fourth graders virtually joined a Willard fourth grade class for some Halloween caroling.  The two classes were able to see and sing to each other via videoconferencing equipment.  The Tandberg allowed Mrs. Paradis (a former Willard teacher) and Mrs. Silva to continue their tradition of a Halloween sing along.

Cats

Cookie's WeekDrat that fat catKindergarten storytime began with two songs about the days of the week.  They were followed by two stories about cats.  The first book, Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward, features a naughty cat named Cookies who makes a mess every day of the week.  The second story was Drat That Fat Cat!  by Pat Thomson.  In that funny tale, a fat cat eats everything in its path.  After selecting new books, the students decorated cat masks to take home.

Author study: Denise Fleming

In the small small pondEach week, the first graders review the organization of the picture book section (alphabetical order by the author’s last name) and where the books by the featured authors are shelved.  The fiction picture books have yellow stickers with letters on the front covers.  The letter is the first letter of the author’s last name and they match the letters on the front of the shelves.  The children are learning to be more independent in finding books they are interested in reading.

busterThis week the first graders were introduced to author/illustrator Denise Fleming and her books.  They enjoyed two of her rhyming books, In the Small, Small Pond and In the Tall, Tall Grass, before meeting Buster, a dog who gets lost after running from the cat his person brings home.

ghosts in the houseIn recognition of Halloween, the lesson ended with a new book, Ghosts in the House! by Kazuno Kohara.  After the story, the children made ghosts out of two tissues and a piece of yarn.  They are boo-tiful!
