Turtle's Penguin DayThis week, the Miss Stevens, Mrs. Dillane, and Mrs. Carlisle’s kindergartners*, the first graders, and the students in Mrs. McCall’s class were treated to the delightful story Turtle’s Penguin Day by Valeri Gorbachev.  In the story, Little Turtle hears a story about penguins and pretends to be a one!  The children made penguin masks after hearing the story so that they, too, could pretend to be penguins.

Miss Mallon and Mrs. Sturtevant’s second graders also enjoyed Turtle’s Penguin Day.  They wanted to know the sound penguins make so we turned to the animal database PebbleGo to find out.  It turns out that different types of penguins make very different sounds!  Check it out for yourself at http://www.pebblego.com

* Due to the cancellation of school on Friday, the other kindergartners will get to enjoy this story at a later time.

Geography challenge

This week’s challenge was a geography quiz.  Students were asked to identify the capital of Maine, Utah, New Mexico, Tennessee, and North Dakota.  They were encouraged to use an atlas of the USA as a reference.  Quizzes with all the capitals correctly identified were entered in a drawing for a stuffed animal.  The lucky winner is fourth grader Joshua.

Mrs. Flynn’s class writes on!

Mrs. Flynn’s fourth graders have been writing again!  This time the students wrote about a career they want in the future.  While writing about their dream jobs, students had to be sure their writing had to a clear beginning, middle, and end.  They also had to provide supporting details about their career choice and/or their abilities.  As usual, they were accountable for writing conventions (capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling).

Each student’s piece is a separate post.  Take a look at their writing.  You’re in for some interesting reading!  And don’t forget, you are welcome to comment on one or every post!

“My Career” by Kelli

Do you know what I want to be when I become an adult?  I want to be an elementary school math teacher so I can help kids learn.

I want to be a math teacher because I like kids.  I think I can help people of all ages.  I think I can help them because I am great at math!  I know my multiplication and division facts so I could be good at it.

To be a math teacher, you have to think mathematically and you need to know some tricks like the finger trick for nines in multiplication.  I know what all the key words mean.

I think I will be a good math teacher.

“My Hard Hitting Job” by James

What job do I want when I grow up?  I want to be an NFL quarterback.  I want to play football to entertain.  I can also help kids stay in shape.  I’ll also have to stay in shape so I don’t get injured

I want to play for the New England Patriots, the San Francisco 49ers, the Minnesota Vikings, or the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Patriots are my main team. The Vikings are good like some other teams.  I love the 49ers.  They had my favorite quarterback, Steve Young.  They are a good team.  I like Jacksonville, too.

When I retire, I’ll coach my own team.  I’ll name them the Sharks.  Now it’s time for this piece to retire!
