Jan Brett’s Bears

3 BearsSnow BearsMiss Kimball’s class continues their author study of Jan Brett.  In the library, the children listened to Jan Brett’s version of the classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  They discussed the characters, setting, and plot of the story before moving on to another version of the folktale, The Three Snow Bears.  Instead of reading the second book, the children viewed it as a slide show presentation while listening to the downloaded audiobook via an iPod with speakers!  The students identified the characters, setting, and plot of the second book and then compared it to the first.  By changing the setting, Jan Brett was able to create a whole new story!

Analogies contest

Last week’s contest was an analogies quiz.  Students had to select the correct word to finish each of four analogies.  All four analogies involved the irregular plurals.   For example, Foot : feet :: man : ______ (foot is to feet as man is to…men).  All correctly answered quizzes were entered in a drawing for a pink pony stuffed animal.  The lucky winner is third grader Kendra.

Snowsuit weather

Thomas' SnowsuitThis week Mrs. McCall’s students enjoyed the funny winter story Thomas’ Snowsuit by Robert Munsch.  Afterwards, the children colored pictures of their snowsuits.  Mrs. Miliano took photos of the children’s faces to add to the snowsuits.  Then she combined the pages to make a snowsuit book for the classroom!NOW

Chickadee Award program news

On the FarmThe kindergartners experienced the book On the Farm by David Elliott.  The book, illustrated with beautiful woodcuts, is a collection of poems about different farm animals.  After the story, the children sang a few verses of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” and, with the help of a musical chicken, did the chicken dance!

little yellow leafThe first and second graders read the book The Little Yellow Leaf  by Carin Berger. They examined the beautiful collages that illustrate the story.  As a follow-up, the first graders colored paper birds and added them to the group collage of a forest grades K-2 started last week.  The second graders learned more about picture book art through a PowerPoint presentation and then tried to discern whether or not various illustrations were examples of collage or not.

Kindergarten storytime

little yellow leafThe book featured during this week’s storytime was the Chickadee Award nominee The Little Yellow Leaf  by Carin Berger.  After the story, Mrs. Miliano pointed out that the book’s illustrations are collages, pictures made up of different papers glued to a background.  The group examined some of the illustrations to note the different types of papers used.  Then the students contributed to a group mural by making trees from different types of paper.  The mural will feature a forest scene and one oak tree with a little yellow leaf still clinging to a branch.
