Grade 1, Grade K | Comment (0)Geo quiz
The library competition for the week of December 1st was a geography quiz. On a map of North America, students were asked to label three countries. Contestants could use a globe or an atlas to assist them. If they correctly labeled Canada, Mexico, and Cuba, their map was entered in a drawing for a red Beanie Baby bear. The winner is Joshua, a second grader in Miss Kimball’s class. Congratulations, Josh!
Grade 2, Library Contests | Comment (0)What do trolls look like?
Kindergarten storytime for the week of December 1st featured an ever popular folktale, The Three Billy-Goats Gruff. After reading the story, Mrs. Miliano referred to the author’s description of the troll: “Under the bridge lived a great, ugly troll with eyes as big as saucers and a nose as long as a poker.” She explained that those descriptive words are meant to help the listener or reader paint a picture of the troll in his/her head. Few students knew what a saucer or a poker is so Mrs. M. took out two saucers for the students to see. She held them up in front of her face for eyes. The children immediately knew that the troll’s eyes are really big. Next she took out a fireplace poker. After showing the students how it is used, she held it up at the end of her nose to demonstrate how long the troll’s nose is. Then the students viewed a PowerPoint slideshow about trolls to see how artists have portrayed trolls in paintings, sculptures, and in books. Finally, the students drew trolls of their own. Some even chose to draw their troll with eyes as big as saucers and a nose as long as a poker!
