Drawing books are a perennial favorite
The library’s collection of drawing books is in demand all year long. Here is a drawing that fourth grader Dante Colley created with the help of the book Draw 50 Vehicles by Lee Ames. Students are encouraged to submit writing and art work to this blog for all to enjoy.
New biographies
We have a slew of new biographies! They feature people such as Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, business tycoon Warren Buffet, explorer Henry Hudson, and athletes Shaun Alexander, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade. Here is a peek at two stunning additions to our biography collection.
Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Randolph Became the World’s Fastest Woman by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by David Diaz is an inspiring biography of the polio-stricken girl who grew up to become the world’s fastest female runner.
This intriguing biography tells how the Victorian artist Waterhouse Hawkins brought dinosaurs to life for all to see. Be sure to check out The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins by Barbara Kerley and illustrated by Brian Selznick.
Award-wining books arrive at CJL Library
We have added many award-winning books to our collection. They include new and old Newbery and Caldecott Winners and Newbery and Caldecott Honor Books. Here are a few of these new-to-us titles.
The Invention of Hugo Cabret, written and illustrated by Brian Selznick, is the 2008 Caldecott Medal Winner.
Summary: When twelve-year-old Hugo, an orphan living and repairing clocks within the walls of a Paris train station in 1931, meets a mysterious toyseller and his goddaughter, his undercover life and his biggest secret are jeopardized.
Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis is a 2008 Newbery Honor Book.
Summary: In 1860, eleven-year-old Elijah Freeman, the first free-born child in Buxton, Canada, which is a haven for slaves fleeing the American south, uses his wits and skills to try to bring to justice the lying preacher who has stolen money that was to be used to buy a family’s freedom.
In the Small, Small Pond by Denise Fleming was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1994.
Summary: Illustrations and rhyming text describe the activities of the animals living in and near a small pond as spring progresses to autumn.
