Finding the right book

Last week Mr. Bloom’s third graders visited the library for a discussion on book selection.  The “Goldilocks” method was introduced.  Some books are too easy and some are too hard.  The goal is to find the book that is “just right.”  After the mini-lesson, the students practiced selecting books that provide some challenge without being too hard.  Selecting “just right” books is a skill the students will continue to work on in the coming months.

Reading between the lines

A Hat for Minerva Louise A recent kindergarten storytime featured stories about a silly hen named Minerva Louise (Minerva Louise and A Hat for Minerva Louise, both by Janet Morgan Stoeke).  In Minerva Louise, the hen sneaks into the farmer’s house and wanders around. The children used the clues the author provides to help them infer what Minerva Louise thinks about the things she finds in the house.  They shared their thinking with a partner at several points in the story.  When it was time for the second story, the children were ready for more of Minerva Louise’s antics.  You’ll have to read the story yourself (or ask a kindergartner!) to find out what she ends up using for a hat!

First Graders love pets!

Pets were the theme of a recent first grade lesson. The children reviewed the difference between fiction and nonfiction books and identified how to classify each book read aloud (Buster by Denise Fleming and Chihuahuasby Connie Colwell Miller). The students also reviewed where the fiction and nonfiction books are kept in the story area and how each collection is organized. Mrs. Miliano identified the location of the pet books in the nonfiction section and she added a sign to the shelf in order to help students locate pet books in the future.
